Plantcare has been spreading green and growing knowledge across South Africa with its latest initiative at Gereformeerde Skool Dirk Postma. In celebration of South Africa’s National Tree Planting Day on 24 September 2025, the team planted indigenous Cape Ash trees (Ekebergia capensis) on the school grounds.
Each tree was a 150-litre specimen, chosen for its fast growth, minimal root-related issues, and ability to provide shade, food for birds and insects, and protection for the nearby school building. The trees also enhance the school’s environment, making outdoor spaces more inviting and functional for children.
Plantcare’s Marnix van Straten took the opportunity to share his expertise with the learners, answering questions and showing them why trees are so important for both people and nature. “Trees are more than just beauty or shade. They are essential for our environment and our communities,” says Van Straten. “By teaching children about trees today, we are nurturing a greener future.”
This project was made possible thanks to an anonymous donor and reflects Plantcare’s ongoing commitment to creating sustainable and beautiful green spaces in communities across South Africa. The team continues to inspire environmental awareness and practical action wherever they plant.
